Peredelkino is a rare case where a trip "out of town" takes twenty minutes by commuter train. Formally, it is already New Moscow, but in fact, it is a pine forest, dachas, and completely different air.
The place is known for being home to writers since the thirties: Pasternak, Chukovsky, Okudzhava, Yevtushenko. Today, their dachas are house-museums, and nearby there is a House of Creativity, which has transformed from a Soviet sanatorium for writers into a cultural venue with lectures, exhibitions, and residencies.
How to get there
Commuter train from Kiyevsky railway station or MCD-4 to "Peredelkino" station - about 20 minutes, ticket less than one hundred rubles. From the station to the House of Creativity, it's a 15-20 minute walk through the forest, and this walk is part of the experience.
Alternative: "Novoperedelkino" metro station, then bus № 316 to the "House of Writers' Creativity" stop.
This is the cheapest and fastest trip "out of town" among all Moscow directions - cheaper and closer than Kolomna or Sergiev Posad.
House-Museums
The museum cluster includes the dachas of Pasternak, Chukovsky, Okudzhava, and Evtushenko. Pasternak's house and Chukovsky's house are on streets perpendicular to Pogodin Street, where the House of Creativity is located.
Pasternak House-Museum - the very house where "Doctor Zhivago" was written. The interior has been preserved, and guided tours are conducted.
Chukovsky House-Museum - the most lively of all, especially with children: everything here is about "Moydodyr" and "Aibolit," and the house still looks as if the owner just stepped out for a minute.
⚠️ Important: the house-museums have different schedules, and you need to book tours in advance by phone. Arriving spontaneously and getting inside is not always possible - this is the main mistake in Peredelkino.
Patriarchal Residence and Cathedral
The second, completely separate reason to visit Peredelkino is one that those who go "to the writers" usually don't know about.
Since 1952, Peredelkino has been the official suburban residence of the Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia, and since 1991, the Transfiguration Patriarchal Metochion has been operating here.
Next to the residence stands the Cathedral of the Holy Blessed Prince Igor of Chernigov - the one with colorful domes that can be seen from afar. The idea to build a large church belonged to Patriarch Alexy II, the project was approved in 2005, and Patriarch Kirill consecrated the cathedral on June 17, 2013.
The domes are laid with colorful tiles, and the building turned out so ornate that it is often compared to St. Basil's Cathedral. For the Moscow region, this is completely atypical architecture, and many people come here just for this view.
The territory of the metochion is open, and the church is active.
House of Creativity
A former writers' sanatorium, which has been relaunched as a cultural space. Here you'll find lectures, performances, exhibitions, a bookstore, and a cafe, and on the grounds - a pond, forest, and modern installations among the pines.
This is the place to go if literary museums don't appeal to you: the territory is open, it's pleasant to walk around, and everything is illuminated in the evening.
