Modern Moscow: GES-2, Artplay, and Former Factories

There's the Moscow shown in guidebooks - the Kremlin, cathedrals, Stalinist skyscrapers. And there's another: former power plants and factories converted into cultural spaces. It's younger, emptier on weekends, and barely overlaps with tourist routes.

If you've already seen the center, this is the best thing to add.

The former city power station

The main impression comes not so much from the content as from the sheer scale: the industrial scope, left as is, reads stronger than any exhibition.

What's important to know: you can only get in with registration - for entry into the building or

Open daily, approximately from 11:00 AM to 10:00 PM. The nearest metro station is Polyanka. It's also close to Bolotnaya Embankment and the Tretyakov Gallery on Krymsky Val, so it's convenient to combine into one outing.

Artplay and Kurskaya

The Kursky District is the second major attraction. Where industrial buildings once stood, design districts have emerged: Artplay with its galleries, showrooms, architecture studios, and cafés, and nearby—Vinzavod, a center for contemporary art housed in the former buildings of a brewery and later a winery.

This isn't a museum in the traditional sense: people come here to stroll between the buildings, pop into galleries along the way, and sit in cafés. Entry to the grounds is free, but you only pay for individual exhibitions.

Passages between buildings: graffiti on the walls, gallery signs, and garlands under the arches—during winter, the entire area is fully decorated.

Half of Artplay is furniture and interior design showrooms: people come here not just for art.

On weekends, there are markets here. Designer items, ceramics, books, food—the selection changes from week to week, but there's always some event going on. This really liven up the area: on Saturdays, life here is completely different from Wednesdays.

You can even play table tennis—tables are set up right on the street between the buildings, and anyone can join in. It's a small thing, but it's exactly these little details that make people come back: it's the only "cultural space" in the city where you don't have to wear a serious face.

The format is great because it doesn't require planning: you arrive, walk around, and leave when you get bored.

How is this different from a regular route?

How to structure your day

Logically, divide by geography: GES-2 and Krymsky Val—one half of the day, Kurskaya with Artplay and Vinzavod—the other. It takes about twenty minutes to travel between them, but it's best not to combine them in one go: they have two different vibes.

If I had to choose one, GES-2 makes a stronger impression, while Artplay has a better atmosphere.

As an alternative for the third day of your trip, this works just as well as parks and estates—other scenarios in "Moscow in 3 Days".

The best time to visit depends on your preferences. Summer (June to August) offers warm weather and long daylight hours, ideal for outdoor activities and festivals. However, it can be crowded and more expensive. Spring (April to May) and autumn (September to October) provide pleasant temperatures and fewer tourists, making them great for sightseeing. Winter (November to March) is cold but magical, with festive decorations and winter sports, though some attractions may have shorter hours.

Year-round: everything under one roof or within walking distance of it. In summer, verandas operate on the grounds of former factories, and in winter, the same program takes place indoors.

Weekdays are better than weekends: on Saturdays, Artplay is crowded, and at GES-2, they're dismantling the registration booths.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, it is technically possible to see everything in one day, but it's better to split it: GES-2 in one half of the day, Kurskaya in the other.

Is entry to GES-2 paid?

Visits require registration—either for entry to the building or for a specific event. Registration must be done in advance.

What is Artplay?

A design district on the site of a former factory near Kurskaya: galleries, showrooms, architectural studios, and cafés. The area is open to the public.

Is it suitable for children?

GES-2 is more for teenagers. There are better options for younger kids.
