Moscow celebrated its 879th birthday on September 5 and 6, 2026. The celebration took place across the districts, not just in the city center. There was no fireworks display for the second year in a row, and the most notable events of the weekend did not happen on stages: on Sunday, a city-wide religious procession took place along the embankments, and the book fair was open at Gostiny Dvor until September 6. Below is a look at how it was and what will be repeated in 2027.
Dates and Format
The celebration took place on Saturday and Sunday, September 5th and 6th. The date, as usual, was announced by the mayor, and the event schedule was published there as well, on the mos.ru website.
The city hall's statement was straightforward: free performances, concerts, and fairs in every district of the city. And so it happened. The central venues of "Moscow Seasons" and the Boulevard Ring were active, but no less took place in parks and neighborhood courtyards. For a visitor to the city, this meant one simple thing: it was crowded in the center, but the same stage and fair were available twenty minutes away by metro without the crush.
Where and what was it
Tsaritsyno - jazz orchestras and theater groups;
Kolomenskoye is a stage show featuring popular performers.
Izmailovsky Park - a theatrical lounge;
VDNKh — "Moscow Courtyards" exhibition and excursions;
Luzhniki — more than twenty sports zones;
Boulevard Ring and Moscow Seasons venues - master classes, concerts, fairs with food and souvenirs.
Admission to concerts and main venues was free. Separate excursions and events listed under the "City Day" tag remained paid, starting from 700 ₽. This year, the tag in the title indicated the theme, not free admission: check the price in the event card before purchasing, not the title.
There was no salute.
There was no celebratory fireworks display in the 2026 program, nor in 2025. If you're looking for where to watch fireworks for City Day, the honest answer for the coming years is: nowhere. The weekend evenings ended with concerts on stages, not volleys over the river.
Sunday's largest event did not go according to the mayor's office's announcement. On September 6, the feast day of the Synaxis of the Moscow Saints, a city-wide procession took place throughout Moscow. It was led by Patriarch Kirill.
The route is about six kilometers: from the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour along the Prechistenskaya and Frunzenskaya embankments and Khamovnichesky Val to the Novodevichy Convent. The journey took from one and a half to two hours. During the procession, the Smolensk Icon of the Mother of God, the relics of Grand Prince Dmitry Donskoy, and the icon of All Saints of Moscow were carried, and near the walls of the convent, people could approach the sacred objects.
A 500-year-old tradition: In 1525, the list of the Smolensk Icon was solemnly transferred from the Annunciation Cathedral of the Kremlin to the newly founded Novodevichy Convent. Today, the procession has been revived after a century-long break; according to RIA Novosti, it gathered about 400,000 people in 2025.
Practical takeaway for those arriving next year: on the Sunday of the holiday weekend, the embankments from Prechistenka to Luzhniki are closed to cars from the morning, and participants gather at the Bolshoy Moskvoretsky Bridge, which is right under Red Square. If you don't plan to march in the procession, it's more sensible to see the city center on Saturday and dedicate Sunday to the parks.

Book Fair in Gostiny Dvor

While the city center prepared for the holiday, the 39th Moscow International Book Fair was held at Gostiny Dvor on Ilyinka street, two minutes from Red Square, from September 2nd to 6th. China was this year's honored guest, but pavilions from other countries were also present, ranging from Qatar to Belarus.
This isn't a store, it's a five-day festival: hundreds of publishers with booths, books cheaper than retail, author meet-and-greets on multiple stages simultaneously, lectures, and a large children's program. The schedule is posted at the entrance and changes daily, so it's worth checking it on-site.
Children's booths are the noisiest part of the fair; parents and illustrators alike hunt for books here.
Tip for 2027: The fair traditionally takes place in early September and coincides with the holiday weekend. If you're coming for City Day, allocate half a day for Gostiny Dvor - it's the only venue in the city center with shelter and a place to sit down peacefully during those days.
What will you encounter on the road if the center is blocked?
The Epiphany Cathedral on Bogoyavlensky Lane is Naryshkin Baroque from the 1690s, just a stone's throw from Nikolskaya.
During the holiday weekends, Red Square and Nikolskaya Street are periodically closed for inspection, and traffic is rerouted to the alleyways of Kitay-gorod. This is not a loss. Between the "Ploshchad Revolyutsii" and Ilyinka Street stands the Epiphany Cathedral of the former Epiphany Monastery, one of the oldest abbeys in the city - a pink Naryshkin Baroque masterpiece from the late 17th century, which is almost hidden from Nikolskaya Street. Next to it is a monument to the Likhud brothers, Greek monk-enlighteners: in 1685, they founded the Slavic-Greek-Latin Academy here, Moscow's first higher education institution.

How to get there

If you stay out late, the metro closes around 1 a.m. After that, night buses will help you out: routes and schedules are also there.
City Day in 2027
The date is set by the mayor, and it falls between the first and second weekends of September: in 2024, it was celebrated on September 7-8, in 2025, it will be on September 13-14, and in 2026, on September 5-6. The official announcement usually appears in the summer, at which time the lineup is also posted on mos.ru.
The procession is tied to the church calendar: the Cathedral of Moscow Saints is celebrated on the Sunday before September 8th, which in 2027 will be September 5th. The book fair at Gostiny Dvor also takes place in early September. So, when planning your trip for City Day, consider that there will be three major events happening in the city center that weekend.
